What counts as a “Signature-Based” Visa Debit transaction?
Your signature, not your PIN, is the key to a signature-based transaction. At the merchant:
- Swipe your MCU Visa Debit Card
- Select “Credit” (you may have to hit “Cancel” first and then “Credit”)
- Sign your sales receipt. In some cases, like at the gas pump or for a low amount transaction (like at a fast food restaurant), you may not be required to sign anything. Always remember to select “Credit.”
What about online purchases I make with my MCU Visa Debit Card?
Online purchases count towards your total signature-based transactions each month.
I use my MCU Visa Debit Card to automatically pay monthly bills. Will this count towards my total transactions?
Yes, as long as when you signed up for the automatic payment you supplied your creditor with the number on your MCU Visa Debit Card.
Do ATM transactions count towards my total transactions?
No. ATM withdrawals and deposits are not considered signature-based transactions and do NOT count towards the total required transactions.
May I “carry forward” debit card transactions in excess of the required number to the next month?
No. You must complete ten(10) or more signature-based Visa Debit Card transactions for the mid-rate tier, or twenty(20) or more for the high-rate tier each month. Transactions above the ten or twenty will not be carried over to help meet the requirements the following month.
What is an eSubscription?
An eSubscription is what you have when you agree to receive all three of the following types of notices electronically:
- eStatements: your periodic credit union account statement
- eNotices: includes certificate maturity, non- sufficient funds, and late payment notices
- eTax Forms: includes tax forms 1099 Dividend Income Statement, 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement, and 1099SA Health Savings Account Statement

You can enroll in eStatements or eSubscriptions within MCU Online Banking under the MCU Services tab.
When will my eStatement be available?
Your eStatement will be available to view, print or download within MCU Online Banking by the 3rd business day of the month (for the prior month). You will receive an eStatement notification via email letting you know your eStatement is available.

Will my Social Security count towards the direct deposit requirement?
Yes, your social security or other government payments that are automatically credited to your account will count towards the direct deposit requirement.
What is an ACH Credit or Debit transaction?
An ACH transaction is a method of payment (or credit) that allows companies to electronically withdraw (or credit) funds from your checking account. You are the only one who can give authorization for an ACH debit to occur, at which time the authorized amount is deducted from your account. Many companies use ACH transactions as the vehicle that allows you to automatically make monthly payments each month for your loan, cable TV, phone service etc.
Is there a monthly service charge for an MCU Checking Account?
No, there is no monthly service charge for this checking account.
Are there any fees if I don't meet the requirements each month?
No. If you do not complete all the qualifications each month, there are no fees. You simply do not earn the higher dividend rate. You'll still enjoy free checking and have the opportunity to earn the higher dividend rate the following month.
When is the monthly start and stop date for fulfilling the qualifying transactions?
The monthly cycle for fulfilling the transaction requirements is from the first day of the month until the last day of the month. All required transactions must post to your account during the time in order to qualify for the higher dividend rate. For instance, if you make a signature-based purchase with your MCU Visa Debit Card on August 31st , but the transaction does not post to your account until September 2 nd , the transaction will count towards your September requirements.
How will I know if I qualified to earn the higher dividend rate?
You will receive an email each month letting you know if you met your qualifications or not.
Can the dividend rate on my MCU Checking Account change?
Yes, the dividend rate is subject to change.
Can I open more than one MCU Checking Account?
Yes, you may open more than one MCU Checking Account. However, you'll need to complete the qualifications on each account to earn the higher dividend rate on each account.
Can I switch my current account to this high-yield MCU Checking Account?
Yes. You are welcome to switch to this new account. Please call 800-662-2772 and an MCU Financial Service will be happy to assist you.
Will I need to order new checks and a new Visa Debit Card?
Your account number will remain the same, as will your checks, and any automatic transactions like direct deposit and ACH transactions. You may need a new debit card. Your MCU Financial Service Associate will be able to determine is you will need to order a new card.
Can a Business/Organizational Group open an MCU Checking?
No. MCU Checking is currently only available to individual members.
