You can make contributions to your HSA each year that you are eligible.
For 2010, the maximum contribution that can be made for individuals with single coverage is $3,050*, and the maximum contribution for family coverage is $6,150*.
Individuals age 55 and older can also make additional catch-up contributions. The maximum annual catch-up contribution for 2010 and thereafter is $1,000.
Other points about contributions:
- Tax-free contributions can be made by you, your employer, or both. Total contributions are limited annually.
- You can deduct the contributions (even if you do not itemize deductions) when completing your federal income tax return.
- You must be covered by a qualified High Deductible Health Plan and have no other medical insurance.
- Deposits not made by pre-tax payroll deductions or an employer may be used as a deduction on your federal income tax return.
- Contributions can be made as late as April 15 of the following year.
