Social Life

Instant social life - just add water.

Many students will choose to live in the dorms during their first year at college. While this may have a number of negatives (music keeping you up at night or smelling someone else's dirty laundry) it also is a great way to start off in a new environment.

One of the positives is the instant social life it offers. Not everyone will jump on the bandwagon, but it is likely that there will be many activities that you can choose to participate in that will help you meet people right away. Some examples include intramural sports and planned social events like movie nights or barbeques. But if pre-planned isn't your thing just remember that everyone on your floor has to eat sometime. If you have a meal plan just eating together is a good way to get to know people.

Other things that you can do in your dorm:

Internet access

chat with others or surf together

Study together

either in a lounge or at the library with people from your dorm

Attend sports events

many people from your dorm may get football or basketball tix

Exercise

never hurts to have a workout buddy after too many pizzas!

Some things to remember:

The basic rule of politeness goes along way:

"Treat your roommate as you would like to be treated."

If you hate the smell of dirty socks, be sure yours are picked up.

Be quiet during regular sleeping hours.

Clean up after cooking or snacks - moldy utensils are just uncool.

Make your bed - remember this just isn't your bedroom it is someone else's living room.

By following this basic guidance and getting out there and making some friends, you will soon find that moving into this new environment isn't ok, but a blast!
